In the early 1960’s two Lutheran churches decided that the best way to follow Christ in their common neighborhood was to merge and become a single Lutheran church. They bought “Tiny Dumont’s Dance Hall” at S.E. Market and 117th in Portland and began to worship together. They chose the name “Gethsemane Lutheran Church” and began to make plans for a sanctuary and an office building. In the late 1960’s the new buildings were completed, dedicated, and the good work of worship and mission truly begun!
Ministry has continued in the following years. Over time Gethsemane has celebrated its ministries, gifts and talents through our preschool, choirs, and care for the homeless and the hungry. We continue to seek connection, relationship, and mission in, around, and for our neighborhood and surrounding community.
