Frequently Asked Questions

What age must my child be to start school at Gethsemane Lutheran Preschool?

We follow the same guidelines as the public school system in requiring children to be either 3 or 4 years of age by Sept. 1st to begin preschool for the school year.

Do you require children to be toilet trained?

Yes, children enrolled in preschool must be toilet trained. We realize that with young children there may occasionally be an accident. However, a preschool child needs to be trained where they are no longer wearing diapers, pull ups, or having accidents frequently. They also need to be able to verbalize to preschool staff when they need to use the bathroom.

Is your preschool a part of Gethsemane Lutheran Church or are you a separate business?

Our preschool is a ministry of Gethsemane Lutheran Church and is supported by this congregation. Part of our curriculum includes a chapel lesson once a week on a biblical story or theme. We also include prayer in our daily schedule.

Are preschool families required to be a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church to attend the preschool or to be a member of a church?

No, we consider our preschool as a ministry in the community and are open to all families, whether they have a church home or not.

Are preschool parents required to help in the preschool classroom or with preschool activities?

No, preschool families are not required to assist with the preschool program. However, we encourage families to assist either in the classrooms, at special events, or with preparation of materials at home. A volunteer sheet is sent home at the beginning of the year with many ways families can help out in our program.

Does tuition vary with the number of school days each month?

No, tuition remains the same each month, regardless of the number of school days held in the month.

What is “Lunch Bunch”?

Lunch Bunch is extended time after the regular preschool hours of 9 to 11:30 AM. Lunch Bunch allows children to stay from 11:30 AM to no later than 1 PM. Children bring their own lunch, we provide juice. The children first have time in the M&M Room, eat lunch together, and then have play time together. There are no structured lessons during Lunch Bunch. The cost is an additional $7 per session beyond tuition fees.

What will my child learn at preschool?

We believe in teaching the whole child-spiritually, socially, emotionally, academically, creatively, and physically. For many children, preschool is the first time they are in a structured environment and interacting with other children. There is so much to learn how to play and cooperate with other children and adults. The children also will learn readiness skills to prepare them for kindergarten. We have an Activity Room to develop children’s large motor skills as well as a specialized room to develop art skills and promote scientific thinking in children. Our weekly chapel lessons reinforce to our preschoolers Jesus’ love for each of them.

What do I need to do to enroll my child?

Download the registration form from this website. Return the completed form with the registration fee. Registration for the coming school year begins each February. Please call the church office at 503-256-1835 for these dates and for further information. Are any other forms needed to register my child?

The registration form and fee secures your child place in the class. At the beginning of the year, a completed State of Oregon Certificate of Immunization Status form (which you may download from this site) is required, in addition to an emergency authorization card from the preschool .
