ABOUT GETHSEMANE LUTHERAN CHURCH
Gethsemane Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Oregon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We were formed from the creative combining of 2 small churches in east Portland/Multnomah County in 1964; Hope Lutheran and Mount Olivet… each with roots from different Lutheran denominations!
The property of the old Tiny Dumont’s dance hall at 117th and Market was purchased and together the newly formed Gethsemane Lutheran Church turned it into a new interpretation of a center for community and celebration. 60 years later, being a center for community and gathering continues to drive our work together as we serve the community and share in worship and fellowship together!
MISSION STATEMENT
We are forgiven and called by God to proclaim the Good News of Christ. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, our mission is to serve both the physical and spiritual needs of all people in our changing society. We welcome all races, abilities, genders, and sexual orientations.

VALUES
As the people of God at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, we value:
+ The Dignity of All. We believe and practice welcoming the community outside of our doors as well as within our GLC family. We make decisions as a community together that acknowledge the God-given dignity of our neighbors, friends, and those whom we have not yet come to know.
+ Building Trusting Relationships. We believe and practice the slow work it takes to build trust within our community and with our neighbors. We go slow when we need to show care and concern for our own community members. We make decisions based on input and feedback that is part of our ongoing practice of relationship with one another.
+ Outreach. We believe and practice turning our attention outside of ourselves and our congregation and towards the community, our neighbors and the world. As followers of Jesus, we understand ourselves to exist for purposes beyond our own congregational community. We see the neighborhood outside our walls as a place of vitality, life and opportunity.
+ Generosity. We believe and practice the placement of our money and our time into efforts that benefit more than just ourselves. Inspired by our call to service in Christ, we put our bodies and our money into the space of the needs of our neighborhood, our larger church, and the world.
